I'm writing to ask you to kick in a few extra bucks again for the Book Stars program, which, as you know, places free books in the hands of needy children all around Sonoma. Many of these kids have no books in their houses--none, zero, nada. In fact, whenever we have groups of elementary and middle school kids come visit the store, they often think this is a library. Many have never been to a book store in their life. In fact, to them, the very idea that one can own a book is exotic. We think it shouldn't be that way. Not here. Not in America. Not in the richest country in the world. But the other (and more important) reason you should come in during the holidays and buy a few children's books for the Book Stars program is not for the kids--it's for you. When you give to something like this, you ennoble yourself. And you will actually feel better as a result. Why? Because when you buy a book to give away, you make a powerful statement that you believe in the future of this community. That you want all children in Sonoma to have a crack at a decent education. That just because you're born poor it doesn't mean you have to live the rest of your life that way. And reading is the key to turning it all around. That's why we're so proud of this program. Yes, we bring in authors and workshops and all kinds of extra-curricular activities here, but Book Stars is literally our chance to connect you with the future of Sonoma. The power is in your hands. It's up to you what kind of world you want to live in.
