Suzanne Maggio will present her memoir, The Cardinal Club: A Daughter’s Journey to Acceptance, at Readers’ Books on Thursday, March 12th at 7:00. When her mother developed Alzheimer’s disease in her early sixties, author Suzanne Maggio longed to find a way to hold on to her. The Cardinal Club is the story of her efforts to make amends with her mother following her death. Weaving between the contemporary challenges of caring for her mother as the disease takes hold and the challenges of her upbringing under the control of a Medici-esque matriarch and finally her own challenge to separate her identity from that of her mother’s, while never giving up hope that someday she will earn her mother’s acceptance. It is an openhearted, deeply compassionate story about facing difficult truths and a journey that leads to discovering truly unconditional love.

Throughout her career as a social worker, Ms. Maggio has helped hundreds of families improve their relationships by encouraging them to share and connect their stories. She has a BA in English from Boston College and an MSW in Social Work from California State University of Sacramento. Ms. Maggio is a licensed clinical social worker, who currently is training the next generation as a university lecturer in Psychology, Counseling, and Social Work at Sonoma State University and Santa Rosa Junior College. Her work has been published in Sonoma Family Life, an award-winning parenting magazine, as well as Junior Baseball Magazine. Her story “Yo Soy”, about the search for identity while traveling Nicaragua, won the 2016 silver award from Traveler’s Tales. Ms. Maggio lives in Northern California with her husband, where they raised their two sons and where they now manage three rambunctious dogs and a brood of demanding chickens.
